High temperature fuel cells are ideal for valorising the vastly underused biogas potential in Switzerland
Solid oxide fuel cells can make a substantial contribution to the Swiss power supply (up to 5% of the country’s electricity), reaching high electrical efficiencies of more than 50% already for small plants in the kilowatt range, coupled as well with extremely low nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions, contrary to combustion engines. The sensitivity of the fuel cell to impurities in biogas has been investigated in detail at GEM test facilities and guidelines and methods for removing these from biogas have been developed.
