EPFL Professor Ambrogio Fasoli has been honored with membership in three prestigious academies: the Accademia dei Lincei, the Academia Europaea, and the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW). The nominations recognize his contributions to plasma physics and his leadership in advancing fusion energy research.

The Accademia dei Lincei, founded in 1603, is Italy’s oldest scientific academy and one of the most renowned in the world. It aims to promote, coordinate, and disseminate scientific knowledge, fostering intellectual exchange across disciplines. The Academia Europaea is a pan-European organization that includes over 4,500 scholars across all academic fields, committed to advancing excellence in scholarship and education. The Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) is Switzerland’s leading network for promoting engineering and innovation, focused on strengthening connections between academia, industry, and society.

Professor Ambrogio Fasoli, Director of EPFL’s Swiss Plasma Center, was officially inducted into the Accademia dei Lincei on November 8 and the Academia Europaea on November 27, while a nomination for the SATW is expected to be confirmed shortly. These honors highlight his distinguished research career and his impact on the scientific community.

Fasoli is an internationally recognized expert in plasma physics, particularly in the development of fusion energy as a sustainable energy source. At EPFL, he leads cutting-edge research aimed at advancing the feasibility of nuclear fusion through experimental and theoretical studies. His work addresses critical challenges in achieving controlled thermonuclear fusion, positioning the Swiss Plasma Center as a leader in this field.

These nominations underscore Fasoli’s groundbreaking contributions to plasma science, his visionary leadership in advancing nuclear fusion research, and his commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in engineering sciences. They highlight his role as a leading figure in the global scientific community, reflecting not only his individual achievements but also EPFL’s dedication to fostering world-class research and education.
