Young Scientist Award.
Dr. Abdolhamid Shoory from the Electromagnetic Compatibility Group receives the ‘Young Scientist Award’ at the 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection.
Dr. Abdolhamid Shoory, postdoctoral fellow at the Electromagnetic Compatibility Group was honored at the 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), held in Cagliari, Italy from 13 to 17 September 2010. The ICLP was established in 1951 by a group of eminent scientists and is now considered the most prestigious scientific conference in the field of physics of lightning discharges and lightning protection. Dr. Shoory has been awarded for a paper describing the propagation of electromagnetic fields generated by a lightning discharge. Specifically, Dr. Shoory proposes in his work a simplified expression for the evaluation of the attenuation of electromagnetic fields while propagating along an inhomogeneous stratified soil. The accuracy of the proposed formula was tested using numerical simulation results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. The results of this study can find a useful application in improving the performance of lightning location and detection systems. (Prof. Farhad Rachidi)
