Professor Wolf-Dieter Schneider has been awarded the Rudolf-Jaeckel prize from the German Vacuum Society.

The German Vacuum Society (Deutsche Vakuumgesellschaft; DVG) has awarded the 2014 Rudolf Jaeckel Prize to Professor Wolf-Dieter Schneider of the EPFL Institute of Condensed Matter Physics. The award recognizes his pioneering work in surface physics and chemistry.

The Rudolf-Jaeckel prize is awarded annually to honor outstanding achievements in the field of vacuum-based sciences, taking into consideration both their scientific and industrial impact. The laureates are chosen by a five-member committee, which is put together by the DVG’s Advisory Board. The prize itself includes a check for €1000, a medal, and a certificate.

Professor Schneider is being recognized by the DVG for his long-standing and pioneering work in the investigation of transport properties and electronic structures of nanoscale systems by means of photoemission and scanning tunneling techniques.

The award ceremony will take place during the 8th Symposium on Vacuum-Based Science and Technology (29 September-2 October 2014) in Kaiserslautern.
