Urban Recycling

"Recycler l'urbain" ("Urban recycling") has just been published by MétisPresses. In an original manner, it invites experts from diverse fields to bring a fresh perspective on specific issues for this type of habitat. Two professors from the Architecture Institute (IA) of the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Prof. Paola Viganò from the Laboratory of urbanism (LAB-U) and Prof. Emmanuel Rey from the Laboratory of architecture and sustainable technologies (LAST) are among the authors.

Ecological transition, reduced consumption, concerns about sustainability, livability and fairness: at the beginning of the 21st century, new conceptions and practices call the functioning of the contemporary city into question and raise doubts as to its capacity of metamorphosis. The upcoming change of paradigm creates a need for rethinking all human installations and considering a new alliance between man and his environment.

“Recycler l’urbain” (“Urban recycling”) is an attempt to rethink lifecycles and to promote transformation as the main action on habitat. Extending the concept of “recycling” to the diverse and interlaced processes structuring urban territories proves to be a highly efficient strategy to tackle challenges facing humanity. In order to answer the important and unavoidable questions raised by this approach, the book invites disciplines as varied as ecology, economy, geography, history, architecture, urbanism, landscape, sociology and philosophy.
