The Swiss Welding Institute (SWI), based in Yverdon, received an accreditation from the European Space Agency (ESA) to train and certify specialists in the field of highly reliable electronics for space applications. A training center has been created in Sainte-Croix.

To ensure perfect performance of the electronics systems on board satellites or spaceships and guarantee their robustness, the space sector needs special competences in welding. Now, the Swiss companies active in the field will no longer have to send their collaborators abroad to be certified. The Swiss Welding Institute, based in Yverdon, received an accreditation from the European Space Agency (ESA) to train and certify specialists in the field of highly reliable electronics.

Thus, a new training center, which will be operational starting 2015, has been created at the Technopole in Sainte-Croix, in partnership with the Haute École d'ingénierie et de gestion du canton de Vaud (HEIG VD), the Centre Professionnel du Nord Vaudois (CPNV) and the Swiss Space Center at EPFL (SSC).

This new center is the 7th "ESA-Approved skills training school" in the world. Welding for space is the sector where the highest level of reliability is required. "It simply has to be carried out to perfection before the satellite is launched, as we cannot get it back from space if we detect a flaw," says Volker Gass, director of the Swiss Space Center.
