Three new professors named by the ETH Board

At the March 6th and 7th nomination meeting, the ETH Board has appointed three new professors at the School of Basic Sciences.

Clément Hongler and Hoai-Minh Nguyen have both been appointed Tenure Track Assistant Professors for Mathematics, prof. Nguyen will start on August 1st 2013 and prof. Hongler on July 1st 2014.
Dominic Tildesley, Director of the European Center for Atomic and Molecular Calculation at the EPFL, has been named Adjunct Professor.

Professor Clément Hongler, is currently Assistant Professor at Columbia University in New York, USA, he is regarded as exceptionally talented. Immediately after completing his doctoral dissertation at the University of Geneva in 2010 he got an appointment at the prestigious Columbia University. In his field of specialisation, the Ising model, he is already a leading global expert. The Ising model is used to describe complex systems that in the future will be of great significance for both fundamental and applied research scientists.

Professor Hoai-Minh Nguyen, is currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the University Minnesota in Minneapolis and St. Paul, USA, he is a specialist in the field of real analysis. In recent years he has succeeded in solving problems related to Sobolev inequalities and to the Jacobian determinant, which previously had defeated the best minds in the world. With his exceptional talent, Hoai-Minh Nguyen will significantly enhance mathematical research at the EPFL. Moreover, thanks to his interest in problems in the field of physics, he is also well positioned to make significant multidisciplinary contributions.

Dominic Tildesley is a distinguished scientist in the field of scientific computing and molecular simulation. He has contributed significantly to the development of simulation techniques for liquids and polymers. Since January 1 2013, he has occupied the function of Director of the Centre européen de calcul atomique et moléculaire (CECAM) which established its headquarters at EPFL in 2008. The CECAM is an institution supported by fourteen European research organizations which each year organize 20 to 25 workshops bringing together world experts in the field of digital simulation.
