Profiled in The Economist, our latest optic flow sensor combines the adaptivity and minuscule size of insect ommatidia with optic flow detection capabilities of full compound eyes. The new elementary eye can measure motion in any direction at 300 Hz in a huge range of illumination conditions in less than 2 cubic mm and 2 mg. This work is reported in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface and has been jointly funded by the European project Curvace (now completed) and by the ongoing NCCR Robotics program.
