With the objective of providing a more effective, client-friendly and attractive project funding scheme for researchers the SNSF will implement certain changes as of October 1st 2016.

The key changes in project funding are as follows:
• the maximum project duration is increased to four years
• more flexibility with regard to grants and how they are used
• restrictions on the number of applications and projects evaluated under the project funding scheme, the aim is that researchers focus their research as far as possible on a single project, it is possible to submit a second application, provided its subject matter is clearly different. Only one application can be submitted per deadline.

To create a situation in which it is clear who has the scientific responsibility for a project, only researchers who are responsible for the research idea and the implementation of the project should act as applicants. As a rule, this is one person per project. Two or more applicants are accepted if they are needed to achieve the targets set for the planned project. Researchers who contribute to a project without assuming project responsibility are assigned the new role of project partner.

Project funding is open to all scientific fields, disciplines and research ideas and will continue to be the SNSF's main funding scheme. The April 1st and October 1st deadlines will remain in place.

A second round of information providing details of the innovations in project funding is planned for the end of February 2016.
