The Federal Council decided today to prolong the mandate of professor Patrick Aebischer until December 31, 2016, based on the unanimous proposal of the ETH Board and the wish of Patrick Aebischer to hand over the presidency of the School in a little less than two years.

Patrick Aebischer was appointed President of EPFL by the Federal Council on May 14, 1999 and has been renewed three times in this position since then. His fourth term will end on February 29, 2016. In a press release published today, the Federal Council announces this decision and thanks Patrick Aebischer for his invaluable contribution to the landscape of Swiss research and education. In a press release published at the same time, the ETH Board also underlines the impressive development of the School under the leadership of Patrick Aebischer.

The process of appointment of the future President of EPFL will be initiated by the ETH Board in accordance with the usual procedure. The Federal Council will nominate the person who will succeed Patrick Aebischer in 2017.
