Participation in the lecture series "Magma & Principles"

Prof. Emmanuel Rey of the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) participated in the lecture series of the course “Magma & Principles” organized at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) by the Laboratory of Spatial Manufacturing (MANSLAB). Called "A duo at the heart of the orchestra?”, his intervention constituted an empirical analysis of the relationship between architect and client in the context of major urban transformation projects.

The lectures series of the course "Magma and Principles" aims to outlining an image of the architecture through its convergences and divergences around a given theme. This year's theme "CLIENTS" tends to explore through different viewpoints the different relationships that architects may have with a client.

Today, a wide range of different relationships between private clients, public investors, general contractors or housing cooperatives exists, which each time requires very specific forms of communication.

The teachers invited to share their experience on this specific theme are respectively : Kempe Thil, Bernard Cache, Vincent Kaufmann, Roberto Gargiani Yves Weinand, Patrick Aebischer, Giuliani & Hönger, Andrea Bassi, Jacqueline Burckhardt, Emmanuel Rey, De Vinck Taillieu and Bakker & Blanc.

During a realization at a domestic scale, the architect and his client often maintain an intense relationship, both direct and intimate. What happens to it in projects involving the transformation of large urban areas? Based on recent experiences, Prof. Emmanuel Rey testified to the complexity, but also to the enrichment of the architect’s role in such contexts.
