From 2014, the Commission has been running a pilot on open access to research data in selected areas of H2020. A FAQ about the extension of the Open Research Data Pilot has recently been published.

Here are the most important information:

  • All research data don't have to be open access, it is however encouraged.
  • Opt-outs are possible at any stage - before or after the signature of the grant agreeement but reasons have to be given.
  • The proposals are not evaluated more favourably because they have agreed to share ther research data and are not penalised if they opt-out!
  • The appropriate document to regulate open access to research data is the Model Grant Agreement (MGA)
  • All data needed to validate the results presented in scientific publications are covered by the obligation
  • The data management plan (DMP) describes the data management life cycle for the data to be collected, processed and/or generated by a H2020 project.
  • The DMP is considered as a deliverable. It would thus follow the standard procedures if sanctions for non-compliance would be needed.
  • Costs related to open access to research data are eligible for reimbursement during the project.
  • The ORD pilot is being extended to all areas of H2020 but not all instruments are suitable (for example: co-fund, prizes, ERC-PoC, ERA-Nets, SME instrument phae 1 are exlcuded).
