Nine EPFL MOOCs are starting this fall
23.09.13 - EPFL is launching nine MOOCs this fall. Four of them have started this week.
Four new EPFL MOOCs have been launched on the coursera platform this week. The courses are two introductory programming courses, in Java and in C++, the first year course on mechanics as well as a course on the art of structures. All four courses are taught in french and have drawn more than 26'000 registrations. The courses are followed by students from all over the world. On the campus, professors are combining the online offering of the MOOC with in their teaching in class and interactive exercise sessions as well as tutoring.
Among the highlights of the MOOCs, students from the programming classes can submit code which will be compiled and tested automatically, students from the mechanics class have access to commented physics experiments and guest lecturers and students form the art of structures class can access interactive exercises to understand the behavior of cables and arches.
In addition, our already popular courses Functional Programming Principles in SCALA and Digital Signal Processing are running a new session. This second issue of the courses is already totalling more than 35'000 registrations. Later this fall, we'll have three additional new courses about Principles of Reactive Programming, a follow-up of the functional programming course, Understanding Microcontrollers, a french speaking introductory course about microcontrolers and Neuronal Dynamics, our first course on the edX platform.
The production of the MOOCs represents an important investment for the professors and their team who have spent their summer developing assignments and recording videos in the studio.
