The collaborative research paper between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (LMS-EPFL) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), entitled “Numerical modelling of energy piles in saturated sand subjected to thermo-mechanical loads” by Alessandro F. Rotta Loria, Anthony Gunawan, Chao Shi, Prof. Lyesse Laloui, and Prof. Charles W. W. Ng, is the most cited and 2nd top downloaded article in the journal Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment.

The work is devoted to investigate the impact of different magnitudes and combinations of thermal and axial mechanical loads on the mechanical behaviour of energy piles in saturated sand. It is based on a series of numerical analyses and centrifuge tests. The study aims at providing Researchers and Professional Engineers with concepts that may be considered for the analysis and design of energy pile foundations.
