New guidelines for Open Access to publications and research data have been published by the European Commission as part of Horizon 2020, the new EU programme for research and innovation.

Horizon 2020 requires the results of all the EU-funded research projects to be published in open access.

In addition, Open Access to research data underlying these publications is strongly encouraged through the Open Research Data Pilot. This pilot aims to improve access to and re-use of data generated by research projects for the benefit of society and economy. Access to data also allows a stronger validation of publications.

This decision affects some EU-funded Swiss projects as well, and more generally, it is in line with the new research data policies, more and more adopted by other funding agencies and scientific publishers (such as PLoS and Nature Publishing Group).
