Congratulations to the winners of the « Nothing is lost… everything is transformed» challenge by Nitto!

On May 28th, the 3rd Fusebox challenge ended with a closing ceremony at the Rolex Learning Center where the jury announced and rewarded the 8 winners with a total prize of 3000 CHF. The challenge was sponsored by Nitto, a Japanese company present at EPFL’s Innovation Park, looking to develop innovative solutions in the field of environmental sustainability.

On May 28th, the suspense was at its peak up before the jury announced the Top 3 winning ideas of the “Nothing is lost… everything is transformed challenge”.

Gold Award (1000 CHF): “From Lead to Gold”
The idea: recycle and get all the value out of heavy metals, real gold mine today polluting our soils

Silver Award (800 CHF): “Green Algae into Biodegradable Fertilizing Film”
The idea: transform undesirable green algae into biodegradable fertilizing film for sustainable agriculture

Bronze Award (600 CHF): “Sustainable Street Food”
The idea: create a foldable, self-cleaning, reusable sheet in a novel material inspired by shark skin to replace disposable vessels.

The Top 5 leaderboard received an extra reward 600 CHF total to thank them for their great engagement and participation to this challenge: Alicia Gayout, Nicolas Pierret, Alexandre Gubert, Francesco Mazzilli and Pierre Jacquet.

During the 3 weeks of online brainstorming, over 80 ideas and 750 comments have been shared on the platform transforming the unused into treasures for our future society. Plastic waste into 3D-printing ink, rain water into electricity, energy from human motion, trendy repair shop, algae… discover all the smart contributions on the platform – ideas all waiting to be transformed! 

Authors and contributors of the Top 10 nominated ideas met at the Rolex Learning Center for the closing ceremony where the jury and experts rewarded the winners with their “Camipro” voucher and a hand written diploma in Japanese and English. They then had the opportunity to network and exchange over a cocktail and sushi party organized by Nitto.

Nitto, looking for new ideas in the field of environmental sustainability at the occasion of their 100-year anniversary, will now evaluate the ideas and define concrete projects to work with EPFL. The most talented and motivated participants may be invited to join future projects.
