Is your food really what it says on the label? Students and the public are invited to two open sessions on food safety in the Swiss Tech Convention Center.

When revealed, food scandals make big headlines. But how do experts detect food fraud, and what can be done to make sure that we know what we are eating? On the 18th and 19th of June, two events will give the public a chance to get a glimpse on what goes on behind the scenes to guarantee the safety of the food we eat. They will be part of a Symposium on Environmental Analytical Chemistry, with a special session on food safety, organized by Felippe De Alencastro, from ENAC’s Central Environmental Laboratory (CEL).

On the evening of Wednesday, June 18, from 4:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., deputy director the US Food and Drug Administration Stephan Musser will present the US perspective in a lecture that will be open to the public. His talk will contrast the relatively simple goal of ensuring food safety with the complicated realities confronted in the real world.

And on Thursday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a think tank will be held with high ranking individuals responsible for the production, the distribution, and the regulation of food, including among others the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, the Federal Office for Risk Assessment, the German certification company SGS, Nestlé and Coop. The audience will also be called on to participate in the think tank. As a student and researcher in the audience, you will be able to provide a complementary academic perspective.
