At its traditional Research Day on June 16, 2011, the IC School presented a discipline of interest to the public: computer graphics and vision. A success, as about 300 visitors came to assist to the event taking place for one day. Among them were the journalists of two well known medias in the French part of Switzerland: La Télé (a local and private television), and Couleur3 (the third Swiss-French radio channel of the Swiss public service).

Both medias have been particularly interested in the IC research projects and startups presented during the afternoon. They offered an excellent opportunity for visibility to the School, by opening their respective channel and by covering subjects linked to computer graphics and vision. The vast discipline - very actual with applications like Google Streetview - enables to understand and to extract the sense of images.

Great echoes with sound and images
The two medias spoke about the activities of the startup Pix4D, from the Computer Vision Laboratory (CVLAB). As a reminder, Pix4D automatically generates 3D models from conventional 2D snapshots. Those pictures are taken by drones.

Pix4D was broadcast in La Télé’s show « 16 Neuvièmes » on June 24, 2011, with an interview of Olivier Küng, PhD student at the CVLAB.

Then, on July 6, 2011, Pix4D was broadcast on Couleur3’s show « Happy Culture » - a show dedicated to numeric creation in all its forms.

But Couleur3 did not just present Pix4D: their journalist carried out and broadcast a total of 6 subjects and 3 interviews of IC researchers.

3 IC researchers « On Air »
For a week, from July 4 to July 8, 2011, Couleur3 listeners could respectively listen to: Laurent Rime (engineer and marketing manager at Vidinoti SA, LCAV), Professor Mark Pauly (Director LGG) and Professor Pascal Fua (Director CVLAB).

Laurent Rime spoke about the IC startup, coming out of the LCAV laboratory, and about Vidinoti’s mobile application Pixlive, an augmented reality application.

Professor Mark Pauly expressed himself about his research projects linked to the capture of facial expressions and to the control of an avatar in real time. He also spoke about his work in the field of geometrical modeling (for ex. in architecture, or art).

Professor Pascal Fua answered the journalist’s questions about the startup coming out of his laboratory, Pix4D. Then, he spoke about his research project which consists of tracking multiple persons with 4 video cameras and a PC. Finally, he talked about his work in the field of human brain cartography and modeling in 3D.

Those links (MP3 files) will enable you to listen to the 3 interviews and the 6 subjects by Couleur3 (in French), again (the interviews are split in different parts):

Furthermore, Couleur3, « the channel for the youth » (audience: 18-35 years old), posted links and videos of the above projects on their Facebook account, which contributed to create a more « buzz » around the IC School, its researchers and its numerous – and fascinating – research projects.
