Professor Keller and CCLab members gave a keynote lecture and four presentations at CICE 2016. CCLab was also responsible for organizing a mini-symposium on FRP Sandwich Structures in Bridge and Building Construction.

Professor Keller gave a keynote presentation during the 8th International Conference on Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites in Civil Engineering (CICE 2016) in Hong Kong, China (14-16 December 2016). The title of his presentation was "FRP sandwich structures in bridge and building construction”, which highlighted CCLab's research in these application fields.

Prof. Keller and Sonia Yanes-Armas also organized a mini-symposium as part of the conference on FRP Sandwich Structures in Bridge and Building Construction.

Further papers concerning CCLab research on FRPs were presented by Julia de Castro, Sonia Yanes-Armas and Haifeng Fan. Julia de Castro presented an experimental procedure for the characterization of the rotational behavior of web-flange junctions of pultruded GFRP bridge decks. The paper of Sonia Yanes-Armas presents the structural concept and design of a 1000-m2 GFRP-polyurethane sandwich roof replacing a timber roof over an indoor swimming pool. Haifeng Fan presented the pull-out behavior of CFRP ground anchors with two-strap ends. The developed CFRP tendons comprised, on the ground side, a prefabricated conical anchor body of high-strength grout in which two CFRP straps were embedded. Additionally, Professor Keller presented the concept of an 18-m-span twin-shaped CFRP-sandwich pedestrian bridge designed as an overhead spatial frame of a complex double-curved shape.

Papers produced in collaboration with other researchers included one on the viscoelastic behavior of composite sandwich panels for civil engineering applications (with Dr. M. Garrido and Prof. J.R. Correia) and on the mechanical behavior of FRP curved sandwich panels with foam cores (with Dr. X. Meng and Prof. P. Feng).

The 8th International Conference on Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites in Civil Engineering (CICE 2016) took place in Hong Kong, China, on 14-16 December 2016. It marked the 15th anniversary of the CICE conference series, which is the official conference series of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). The conference was jointly hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. CICE 2016 provided an international forum for all concerned with the application of FRP composites in civil engineering to exchange recent advances in both research and practice, and to strengthen international collaboration for the future development of the field.
