The Federal Council has approved three new National Research Programmes on smarter health care, antimicrobial resistance and big data.

Three National Research Programmes (NRPs) have been approved by the Federal Council, with an allocated total budget of 65 million CHF. One aims to study ways of improving the Swiss health care system. Another will promote research to help combat the upsurge in antibiotic resistance. And the third will focus on the technical and societal issues raised by big data. The studies will be funded for a period of five years.
The Steering Committees of the three NRPs will be formed in summer 2015. A call for proposals for each programme is due to be launched in autumn 2015. The scope of the programmes and the participation requirements for research groups will be specified on dedicated websites. Subsequently, interested research groups will have three months in which to submit their project outlines. A final selection of projects will be made in 2016, with research being expected to start in autumn 2016 and continue for a period of four to five years.
